Corporate Films for Companies: Definition, Costs, Uses

Thoughtful businessman at the window

A corporate film is a company film that strengthens an organisation’s image with customers, applicants and partners through emotion and information. It shows the company as a whole, is usually 2 to 5 minutes long and, with a professional film production company, typically costs between 10,000 and 50,000 euros. Companies use it on their website, on social media, in sales, at trade fairs and in recruiting.

I am Yvonne Schwalowski, producer at Pathfinder Studios. Since 2008 we have been producing company films for clients ranging from hidden champions to corporations such as MAN, Miele and Audi. In this guide you will find everything you should know before your corporate film: what it is, which film types there are, what it costs, where it works and how to find the right partner.

What is a corporate film? Definition

A corporate film is a film for companies and organisations that builds or strengthens a positive image through targeted emotion and information. It presents the company as a whole: people, values, attitude and performance. It addresses the broadest possible target group – customers, applicants, partners and the public at the same time.

Yes, really: the definition is that simple. But as always in life, it’s not just black and white – there is a whole range of shades, goals and meanings.

Corporate film, company film, business film: what’s what?

“Company film” is the umbrella term for all films that companies have produced about themselves or their own products or services. The corporate film is one of them – and the most versatile. In everyday German, however, “Imagefilm” (corporate film) is often used for any kind of company film, and “Firmenfilm” means the same thing. The “company” can be any organisation: an SME, a municipality, a university or an association.

Is there a difference between a corporate film and a corporate video?

No – technically, corporate film and corporate video are synonyms. But they are perceived differently. In my experience, people who say “video” often think of something shorter, digital and cheaper. A “film”, on the other hand, sounds like cinema: big and expensive.

Take a look on Google: under “Imagevideo” you are more likely to find small providers with fixed prices. You should generally be careful with fixed prices, because a corporate film is an individual service, not an off-the-shelf product whose price you know in advance. In the end, quality is decided by the provider – not the price. And by your gut feeling, which, by the way, always matters.

What makes a good corporate film?

From the director

“A good corporate film thrives on two things: emotion and a clear common thread. If one of them is missing, you have an explainer video or a documentary report, but not a corporate film.

For me, every film starts with the first conversation. What matters is what I feel when I talk to a client or walk into their company. Is the culture warm, quirky or down-to-earth? Is the focus on a shared vision or on optimising workflows and processes? That is exactly a company’s USP – not the one on paper, but the human one.

That is the impression I want to capture in the film. To do this, I coach the interviewees until they speak just as authentically and competently in front of the camera as they do in a client meeting. I choose lenses, perspectives and lighting so that the atmosphere is right. And I think carefully about how the film begins: sometimes with action, sometimes with a sense of security, sometimes with curiosity. Because the first few seconds decide whether the viewer keeps watching.”

The most important company films are the corporate film, commercial, explainer video, recruitment video, industrial film, product video, testimonial video, trade fair and event video, and films for internal communication. Each type has its own goal and its own target group, which determine content, effort and cost. The table shows the differences at a glance; for each type you will find an in-depth article.

And what types of corporate film are there?

The corporate film itself also comes in several varieties. Which one fits depends on your goal and your industry:

  • Company corporate film: the all-rounder. It shows the company as a whole, usually with real colleagues and locations.
  • Brand corporate film: works through feeling and atmosphere, often with actors, voice-over artists and a storyboard.
  • Employer branding film: captures people, culture and everyday working life – ideal for the careers page and job fairs.
  • Industrial corporate film: for manufacturers and hidden champions who want to make technology, precision and global market leadership visible.
  • Location film: for regions, municipalities and the public sector.

When is a corporate film worth it for a company?

A corporate film is worth it as soon as your company has a specific communication problem: stagnating enquiries, too few or unsuitable applications, a unique selling point that isn’t getting across, or a website that has little impact despite good content. It complements your marketing but does not replace it. If you don’t yet have a website or a company presentation, you should start there.

A good salesperson would now answer: “Every company needs a corporate film.” It’s not quite that simple. But I am convinced that for SMEs today, the corporate film is what the website has been since the 1990s: the flagship everyone takes their bearings from.

Produced properly and with a clear goal, a corporate film does four things:

  • It strengthens your image. It conveys your brand essence and messages, charges your brand emotionally and retains existing customers.
  • It brings in more revenue. In the decision-making process, it leads to faster deals, a higher conversion rate and sometimes even higher prices.
  • It raises awareness. On social media it attracts attention, on the website it keeps visitors longer, and at trade fairs it draws people to your stand.
  • It lowers costs. It takes the load off support, trains employees efficiently and shortens sales conversations.

The figures confirm this. In Wyzowl’s State of Video Marketing 2026, 93% of the video marketers surveyed say video has increased their brand awareness. 85% have generated leads with it and 83% have directly increased sales. 82% say video gives them a good ROI. And 89% of the consumers surveyed say the quality of a video influences how much they trust a brand.

How does a corporate film work in the marketing mix?

A corporate film works at every stage of the purchase decision, as the classic AIDA formula shows:

  • Attention: because it is easy to share, it brings your company into the target group’s field of vision for the first time.
  • Interest: image, music and language deliver information at the same time, so it arouses interest in a very short time.
  • Desire: no other marketing tool has as much potential for identification and emotion.
  • Action: placed correctly, it speeds up the decision. According to Wyzowl, 85% of consumers have been convinced to buy something by a video.

Corporate films are therefore an investment in marketing: they don’t just cost money, they also earn it. Or save it, as the case may be.

Where do companies use corporate films?

Companies use corporate films mainly on their own website, on LinkedIn and YouTube, in sales, at trade fairs and events, and in recruiting. A well-planned corporate film doesn’t replace existing measures. It is the element that makes your website, presentation, trade fair stand and social media more profitable.

So that it fits everywhere, we almost always plan short cut-downs of 15 to 60 seconds alongside the main film of 2 to 5 minutes. The reason: according to Wyzowl, 71% of marketers consider videos between 30 seconds and 2 minutes the most effective, especially on social media.

Online: website, LinkedIn and YouTube

Online media are the corporate film’s home ground. Your website is the only trade fair stand in the world that is open 365 days a year, around the clock, to everyone. According to Wyzowl, 82% of video marketers report more website traffic thanks to video, and just as many report longer dwell time. The most used channel is YouTube (82%), followed by LinkedIn (70%). For B2B companies, LinkedIn is therefore one of the most important places for your film.

Trade fairs, events and reception areas

Live communication is the best way to experience your company up close. On screens and displays, your corporate film runs on a silent loop and works even for people walking past. Even better: have the trade fair or event itself filmed. As soon as people see a camera, they feel important, almost like stars – a positive experience that becomes linked with your brand.

In sales

In a client meeting, the film is the ideal opener. Your field sales team shows it on a tablet, your sales team sends it before the appointment. This gets the customer benefit across precisely before the first word is spoken. In international sales in particular, a film in several language versions helps make quality tangible and takes the emotion out of price discussions.

In recruiting

On the careers page, in job ads and at job fairs, a corporate film shows applicants what things are really like at your company. Real employees at real workplaces are more convincing than any stock video. For targeted employer branding, a dedicated recruitment video is worthwhile.

What does a corporate film cost?

A professional corporate film usually costs between 10,000 and 50,000 euros. The range is wide because every corporate film is designed individually. A film with one shooting day and a small team is at the lower end; a production with several locations, actors and language versions is at the upper end.

These factors determine the price:

  • Concept and script: how much strategic and creative groundwork does your message need?
  • Shooting days and locations: every additional day and every further location increases the effort.
  • Team and equipment: a cinema camera, lighting, a drone or special lenses make the difference in image quality.
  • Actors, voice-over artists and music: actors, professional voices and music licences cost extra.
  • Post-production: editing, colour grading, sound design, animation and subtitles.
  • Language versions and cut-downs: every version for another market or channel.
  • Usage rights: where and for how long you may show the film.

Costs are always related to the return on investment. If a higher budget no longer brings a higher return, the extra costs are not worth it. A good film production company will tell you that, too.

Beware of off-the-shelf fixed prices: they rarely suit a film that is meant to represent your company for years. You can read all the pros and cons in Corporate film: fixed price or individual quote? Can you make a corporate film yourself?

Technically yes, but for a film that represents your company for years, it is rarely worth it. For quick social media clips, a smartphone is often enough. A corporate film, on the other hand, needs a concept, lighting, direction in front of the camera and well-thought-out dramaturgy. And according to Wyzowl, 89% of consumers say video quality influences their trust in a brand.

Admittedly, cameras are getting cheaper, and some editing software is free. And almost everyone has a nephew with a camera and a laptop. Let me put it this way: I’m reasonably handy with scissors and I know which hairstyles I like. I still wouldn’t cut my own hair – especially not if I wanted to earn money with my hairstyle.

Filmmaking is creativity, passion and talent. But with corporate films for companies, it is above all a craft. And that belongs in professional hands.

Who produces corporate films?

Corporate films are produced by film production companies, advertising agencies, and videographers and freelancers. All three have their place. What matters is what you need: just images, or a partner who brings strategy, creative work and project management together.

ProviderStrengthWhat to look out for
Film production companyfilmmaking craft, professional structures, everything from one sourceDoes the production company also understand marketing? That can’t be taken for granted. Pathfinder Studios combines film production & strategic marketing.
Advertising agencyknows your brand and your marketing, has strategic strengthsStrong on strategy, but usually lacks its own filmmaking craft; filming is often done with a film production company or freelancers as subcontractors.
Videographer or freelancercreative, flexible, usually inexpensiveAs one- or two-person businesses, they often lack quality assurance, contracts, filming permits and backup in case of absence.

Freelancers are, by the way, the heart of filmmaking. There is hardly a corporate film that doesn’t involve at least one – at our company too. If you already have an advertising agency, ask them: a reputable agency will recommend a film production company or manage the project together with one.

Good to know – artists’ social security levy (Künstlersozialabgabe): if you hire self-employed creatives, such as sole traders or partnerships (GbR), the levy applies in Germany. In 2026 the rate is 4.9% (source in German). It does not apply to invoices from corporations such as Pathfinder Studios, a GmbH.

How do you recognise the right film production company?

Weigh up these five criteria for yourself when choosing:

  1. Quality: do professionalism, equipment and references meet your standards?
  2. Experience: do industry experience and references match your goals and content?
  3. Price: is the value for money right?
  4. Reliability: can you rely on deadlines, budget and rights?
  5. Personality: are you on an equal footing, do you have a good gut feeling?

Examples of successful corporate films

Good corporate films solve a specific problem: they make visible a quality that you would otherwise only notice in use, or they show a company as it really is. Three examples from our work show how different that can look.

Schroeder Valves: making world-market-leader quality visible

Schroeder Valves is an international market leader for pump protection valves.

The task: to make the value of “Made in Germany” visible compared with cheaper international competitors – during ongoing just-in-time production. The particular challenge: the halls of this traditional German company are showing their age, while younger Chinese competitors look more modern – despite having less know-how and quality.

Our solution: we used targeted lighting to push the halls into the background and put the employees centre stage as guarantors of quality. The shoot was planned around the shift schedules, without disrupting operations.

Result: the film, in German and English versions, is now a central tool in international sales and helps the company position itself as a world market leader with the highest quality.

Hoesch Group: a multilingual corporate film for a global player in industrial production

The Hoesch Group, which includes the German industrial hidden champions Hoesch Metallurgie GmbH and Hoesch Granules GmbH, is one of the leading manufacturers and analysts of metallurgical alloys for the global aluminium industry.

Hoesch Metallurgie’s goal: the corporate film should give an all-round view of the company for all target groups – from the sales partner in China and the applicant in Brazil to the school class in Germany on an open day.

Our solution: the corporate film doesn’t start with the company, but with its relevance to our modern world, which is only made possible because aluminium is stable, flexible or robust – thanks to alloying additives developed by Hoesch Metallurgie.

Result: the film has now been in use for 6 years and has been translated into various languages, both with the full voice-over including local language versions and with subtitles.

Bonus – update in 2026: when the company moved to a new, modern site, the film was updated in 2026. Here you can see the English version with Chinese subtitles:

Busch Microsystems: precision in the nanometre range

Busch Microsystems GmbH is a highly specialised manufacturer of air-bearing positioning systems for high-precision industries such as lasers, semiconductors, electronics and toolmaking.

The goal of the corporate film: Busch Microsystems was traditionally seen as a “small granite maker from the Palatinate”; its real know-how – unrivalled positioning precision in the nanometre range for international world market leaders – fell by the wayside. The corporate film was meant to position this inconspicuous hidden champion as a modern, high-performance and innovative provider of maximum precision.

Our solution: in the corporate film we focus both on maximum precision and on stature through expert know-how. The concept is based on perfection & elegance – in macro detail shots, precise camera work and elegant, apt wording in the voice-over. We also put the employees in the spotlight as experts, stage the workshops and products like luxury jewellery, and let employees speak to underline the expertise.

Result: the corporate film has now been in use for 6 years and has been supplemented by numerous product videos for individual systems and high-quality photos.

Conclusion: the corporate film as your company’s flagship

A corporate film is the most versatile marketing tool in moving images: it strengthens image, sales and recruiting at the same time, but should always complement existing measures, not replace them. In summary:

  • A corporate film uses emotion and information to convey a positive image of your company.
  • It is usually 2 to 5 minutes long, plus short cut-downs for social media.
  • A professional corporate film usually costs 10,000 to 50,000 euros.
  • It works on the website, on LinkedIn and YouTube, in sales, at trade fairs and in recruiting.
  • An existing film can often be updated instead of being produced from scratch.
  • It is produced by film production companies, advertising agencies or videographers. What matters is quality, experience, price, reliability and personality.
