What is a commercial?
A commercial advertises a brand, a product or a service with the goal of boosting sales. So a commercial primarily wants to sell.
A subcategory of the commercial is the product video, which, like the commercial, advertises a product or service. Commercials, however, are higher-quality and therefore cost more than product videos.
Depending on the goal and format, commercials are 15 seconds to 3 minutes long.
What is the benefit of a commercial?
A commercial adds emotion to a brand with the goal of boosting sales. Commercials are used mainly in sales, for example on a service page, and are meant to create buying impulses in the viewer.
Commercials are so popular for marketing and sales because they combine information and emotion perfectly and get them across understandably and to the point.

Which brands is a commercial suitable for?
Commercials are suitable for any kind of brand and product – and for services too. In principle it doesn’t matter whether the product/service is delivered in the B2B or B2C sector.
Only the design and tonality of the commercial change depending on the audience and goal.
If the product is complex or needs explanation, an explainer video is more suitable.
Commercials and ads are particularly well suited to presentation on TV and in cinema as well as at the POS (point of sale), but also on social media and at special events.
Product videos always deal with a specific product/service and are more explanatory than the commercial.
Product video, commercial or explainer film?
Any film that focuses on a product or service is a product video. Here information and emotion are roughly balanced.
The commercial concentrates mainly on emotion and less on information and, even more than the product video, aims to build a feeling in the viewer to create a strong buying impulse.
Ads are short, snappy and gripping, aiming to generate attention and boost sales. Here the focus is more on emotion and brevity, as an ad is usually 10–60 seconds long. Ads are generally produced more elaborately and to a higher standard and are therefore often more expensive than pure product videos.
Explainer videos explain complex contexts, processes and customer benefits, thereby improving sales and support. The focus is accordingly more on information and the length is around 2 to 5 minutes.

Where can you use a commercial?
The range of uses for a commercial is as varied as its formats. Commercials and product videos work excellently on the website and on targeted landing pages or product pages.
Shorter product videos and commercials also work very well on social media as well as at events of all kinds. And of course in cinema, on TV and at the trade fair stand. (Not to be confused with the event film).
Explainer videos are also suitable for use on the website or on product pages. But they are also well placed on site in sales presentations or at the POS (e.g. in the DIY store).
What commercial costs should you expect?
The question of how much a commercial costs unfortunately can’t be answered across the board. Every commercial is tailored and produced individually to the specific company, product and goal.
To give you an answer nonetheless: the budget for a commercial starts at around €10,000. Product videos are cheaper to produce than commercials and usually start at €5,000.
The cost of a commercial is made up, by the way, of pre-production (concept, script, storyboard), the shoot (fees for the film crew, equipment and possibly talent/models multiplied by the number of shooting days (usually 2–5 shooting days are needed for a commercial)) and post-production (editing, audio and possibly animation).
Most film productions bill by day rates. Flat rates and “fixed prices” are rather unusual and should be examined more closely.
