How food brands sell more: case study on food photography and food videos

Food photography from the restaurant commercial for Genussregion Aachen showing various bottles of spirits in stylish product design

Good food photography and food videos come down to three things: professional food design that keeps food looking fresh for hours, a precisely timed shooting schedule and a visual language that makes taste visible. Pathfinder Studios produces photo and video assets like these for food brands, restaurants and hotels, including YAYLA, Landhotel Kallbach and Genussregion Aachen, and delivers them for social media, websites, online shops and the point of sale.

How do you convey taste, aroma and freshness through a screen? This article shows what matters when staging food and how our food & beverage unit works.

Why is food photography so demanding?

Food changes constantly on set: steam disappears, milk foam collapses, fruit turns dull under hot studio lights. That is why staging food is one of the most difficult disciplines in advertising production. Every shot is a race against time.

A good camera isn’t enough. Food photography and food video demand aesthetic perfection, technical precision and a deep understanding of how food behaves under light and heat.

How do you make food look appetising in photos and videos?

Appetising food images are created when food design, lighting and shoot planning work together so that the product looks perfect at the decisive moment and taste becomes visible. Our food & beverage unit specialises in the visual staging of food. We rely on sensory storytelling rather than sterile product shots – images you can smell, taste and feel.

Food design: translating taste into a visual signal

Every highlight on a berry and every rising wisp of steam is deliberately controlled, because these details signal “fresh” and “high quality”. Food design and food styling make sure dishes and drinks look their best, from sparkling beer to dessert.

Planning: freshness from the first take to the last

The biggest organisational task is keeping the product fresh throughout the shoot. To do this, we plan refrigerated transport and a precisely timed shooting schedule. The “hero” product – the item for the most important shot – only goes in front of the camera at the perfect moment.

One shoot, many formats

A single production delivers photos and videos for social media, websites, online shops and the point of sale. This keeps the visual language consistent across all channels.

Food design is the master discipline of advertising photography. It’s about translating taste into a visual signal. Every highlight on a berry, every rising wisp of steam has to be perfectly controlled to communicate “fresh” and “high quality”. Our expertise lies in mastering these visual codes so well that viewers get hungry before they even know the product.

In a food production, there is no “maybe”. The biggest production challenge is guaranteeing that the product stays absolutely fresh from the first take to the last. Our process is designed to control exactly that: from refrigerated transport to a precisely timed shooting schedule that ensures the “hero” product only goes in front of the camera at the perfect moment. That isn’t luck – it’s planned perfection.

Examples from our food productions

YAYLA: TV commercial for a food brand

For the well-known food brand YAYLA, we produced a high-reach TV commercial designed to activate consumers and boost sales in retail over the long term. Ingredients and finished dishes take centre stage, staged as appetising food photography in motion. Find out more about commercials and product videos for brands on our service page.

Landhotel Kallbach: restaurant and hotel in a corporate film

For Landhotel Kallbach, we showcased the hotel’s cuisine and service, from the sommelier with an exquisite wine to a dessert with waffle, cherries and ice cream. The food shots are part of a corporate film that wins guests over to the hotel and restaurant.

Genussregion Aachen: regional specialities in product design

For Region Aachen, we photographed and filmed regional specialities: spirits, beer, cakes, pastries and traditional Aachener Printen gingerbread. Each product was given its own stylish product design in the image, to match its origin and character.

Bonus: Mehrsprachig fürs Dreiländereck, d.h. mit deutschem Sprecher und französischem sowie niederländischem Untertitel.

What do professional food images achieve?

Professional food photos and videos whet the appetite, communicate premium quality and set a brand apart from the competition. They increase willingness to buy and anchor the brand in consumers’ minds as high-quality and desirable – in retail, in the online shop and on the menu.

What food brands and restaurants can learn from this

  • Taste needs staging. Without food design, even the best products look flat on camera.
  • Freshness is a matter of planning. Refrigeration, shooting order and hero products determine the result.
  • Sensory, not sterile. Images that convey emotion and enjoyment sell better than plain product shots.
  • Shoot once, use everywhere. If you plan photo and video together, you get consistent assets for every channel.
